À Bout de Souffle par Jean-Luc Godard

English Language Title: Breathless

I love this effortlessly cool piece of French new wave cinema by Jean-Luc Godard. Shot on handheld black & white 16mm in the streets of Paris, it made the soundstage-based productions of Hollywood look old and stuffy by comparison. The French language mixes perfectly with the jazz music soundtrack to form a unique and intoxicating soundscape mix.

This is, without doubt, a uniquely French film. One that could only have been made in Paris, in French, by French people. And yet, the story itself is universal: boy meets girl. A Bout de Souffle also fits perfectly with, perhaps, Godard's most famous quote, "all you need to make a movie is a girl and a gun." Here is the trailer.
